Best Reads of 2014

Now that 2015 is officially here, I feel like I can put together my best reads of 2014. I hate to do it before the actual close of the year because hope springs eternal that I will come across some marvelous books that would then miss being put on the list. Also, because I am just a touch OCD about stuff like this. But probably more because of the former reason. (Yeah, yeah. I know it's the latter too, just humor me.) Because I am unable to stick to a top ten, I created a top ten for general fiction and then declared a few favorites in other categories. Sort of the letter of the law but not really the spirit. Since it is my law, though, I feel confident I will pardon myself before my term in office is up. :-)

So here it is. In no particular order, the list of the top ten books I read this year (some of which were actually published this year too):

Life Drawing by Robin Black
Us by David Nicholls
Cinnamon and Gunpowder by Eli Brown
A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
Euphoria by Lily King
The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
If Not For This by Pete Fromm
Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple
Shotgun Lovesongs by Nickolas Butler
Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan

Favorite non-fiction: The Perfect Score Project by Debbie Stier

Favorite YA: Love and Other Foreign Words by Erin McCahan

Favorite romance: Suddenly Royal by Nichole Chase

Favorite quirky book: What's Your Poo Telling You by Josh Richman and Anish Sheth

Do we overlap at all? What books from your best reading this past year do you think I should have on my list in 2015?

  1. I haven't read any of your list but I have just finished a book called "All the bright places" . I think it's going to be a huge YA for 2015. It's on netgalley if you want to request it! Happy New Year!

  2. Loved Where'd You Go, Bernadette and Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore when I read them too. The only one you might should have on your list for 2015 from my list for 2014 is Yes Please by Amy Poehler, if you like her. You sort of have to get the show Parks and Recreation to understand it, but it's a fun read.

  3. I have only read one of your list, Where'd You Go, Bernadette? It was not one of my favorites. I blame that on the discrepancy of our ages. My favorite was either The Secret Life of Bees or The Invention of Wings both by Sue Monk Kidd. My book club will be reading Mr Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore. We are an eclectic bunch so some will like it and some will not. That makes for good discussion.

  5. I totally get why you can't make a list of the best of the year before the year has finished. I can't either. I should get going with my list actually. Our only crossover is The Rosie Project, which made my best of the year list for 2013. Strangely though I have no interest in the sequel- not sure why.

  7. I really must read A Man Called Ove. It sounds like something I would really like!

Cinnamon and Gunpowder - love the title. I'll have to add that one to my wish list. :-)

  8. I LOVED A Man Called Ove-phenomenally funny and I will recommend it to anyone who will listen! I have "The Rosie Project" but haven't gotten to it yet. I hope to soon, though!
