"Independent People" is grim and sad at times, but I would never call it bleak and desolate. It is also filled with much warmth and humour, beautiful poetry, wry satire and intelligent analysis of various economic systems.

Note too that Bjartur has not two but three sons live past infancy; one dies in his teens, the other two are alive at the end of the novel.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1119335579919927653.post-45745394224290803862009-05-22T17:26:39.281-07:002009-05-22T17:26:39.281-07:00Terrific review of this book, Kristen - like you, ...Terrific review of this book, Kristen - like you, I loved this book for its depth, message and beautiful writing despite the bleakness.Wendyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14332796775305098552noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1119335579919927653.post-12829175725337757402009-05-22T13:08:47.395-07:002009-05-22T13:08:47.395-07:00I read Laxness' The Fish Can Sing a while ago and ...I read Laxness' The Fish Can Sing a while ago and I've been meaning to get to this one.
